The AVHS Chapter.
Learning to code was a struggle at first, but after getting the hang of it, I am now motivated to learn more! Through GWC, I enjoy sharing and connecting with my peers; it's a very collaborative environment. |
I always found STEM courses and subjects interesting because it was logical and analytical. However, in most classes and clubs, there are fewer girls; sometimes you can feel out of place or that you have to prove yourself more than others. |
Being a girl interested in a male-dominated field has definitely been hard, especially because there aren't as many resources, role models/mentors, and opportunities. Through GWC, I have been able help other girls and also learn from supervisors and experts in the field! |
What We Offer.
AP CSA Preparation
The Computer Science A exam tests understanding of programming concepts and ability to read and write computer programs. |
The Summit.
Research shows that girls become interested in STEM subjects around the age of 11 and then quickly lose interest when they're 15, but we want to change that. For the past two years, we've been organizing an annual Girls Who Code Summit in hopes of giving girls access to hands-on STEM exercises and female computer science mentors. We're excited about expanding beyond our after school program and working towards eliminating the gender gap in STEM at the elementary and middle school level!
2020At Pleasanton Middle School, about 100 elementary and middle school girls collaborated to solve a problem meaningful to them using MIT App Inventor.
|
2021About 120 elementary and middle school girls worked in teams (virtually) to build a website addressing one of the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals using HTML, CSS & Javascript.
|
2022 |
2023 |
At Amador Valley High School, over 130 elementary and middle school girls worked in teams, using Python Turtle to develop animations that celebrate a women in STEM.
|
At Amador Valley High School, over 150 elementary and middle school girls worked in teams to build and program robots while exploring space!
